Electronic Chart Display and Information Systems (ECDIS): Standards and Specifications

Bobby M. Lam and Lori A. Mathieu

Abstract: ln November 1995, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) adopted Resolution A/817(19), Performance Standards for Electronic Chart Display and Information Systems (ECDIS). Initially envisioned as a paper chart equivalent under regulation V/20 of the 1974 Safety of Life at SEA (SOLAS) Convention, ECDIS development has progressed to a greater level to take advantage of advanced technologies that provide for a safer, faster, and more efficient method of navigation. There are numetous papers available concerning ECDIS technology and applications. In contrast few papers exist to document the status of ECDIS implementation. The intent of this article is to provide a snapshot of ECDIS related publications and aapraint the reader with the process for formal adoption and implementation of ECDIS. ln addition to IMO Res. A/817(19), there are three other publications that serve as guidauce for specifications, procedures, and “type approval” for an IMO compliant ECDIS; IntemationaI Hydrographic Organization (II-IO) Special Publication 52 (S-52), MO S-57, and International Electrotechnical Commission (IBC) Publication 1174 (See Table 1.0).
