Differential GPS Tests in the North Sea

F. Karkalik, K. Fitzgibbon, R. Vargus

Abstract: An operational evaluation of a prototype differential GPS system was conducted in the North Sea during the summer of 1986. The prototype system was developed by Systems Control Technology, Inc. BP Shipping (BPS) and BP Development, Ltd. (BPPD) supported the field testing. The monitor station was located at Aberdeen, Scotland, and the remote station was onboard BPPD's ESV IOLAIR, operating 120 miles northeast of Aberdeen. BPPD's troposcatter communications system was used for the data link. Two different sets of GPS receivers, computers, and differential software were used in the test. This paper briefly describes the test configurations and the environment and presents a summary of the results.
