Abstract: | A GPS-based tracking and navigation system is being developed as part of a project to enhance vessel traffic management in the Panama Canal. The tracking information will support an automated vessel and resource scheduling system also being developed by the Volpe Center and the Panama Canal Commission (PCC). This paper describes the design and installation of the prototype tracking system. Features of the design process include a high level of user involvement and application of proven technologies. The prototype system is scheduled to be in full operation by autumn, 1997. |
