Abstract: This paper addresses an Automatic Vehicle Location (AVL) concept which incorporates digital dispatch and driver guidance. AVL generally includes an onboard navigation device and radio communications connected to a computer at the dispatch center. By digital dispatch the authors mean providing a driver with graphics and text information defining the vehicle"s next service location along with appropriate instructions. Driver guidance here refers to the process of providing the driver with map information which shows his current position, his next service location and the surrounding road network in such a way that he may efficiently navigate to his destination.
