The USSR's Glonass P-Code - Determination and Initial Results

Gary R. Lennen

Abstract: The USSR has been developing a satellite global positioning system called Glonass which is similar in many ways to the US Navstar GPS system. The USSR has recently released detailed information regarding the system's purpose and technical operation, perhaps to stimulate the sort of international activity that Navstar GPS now enjoys. The Glonass Information released by the USSR thus far [Anodina, 1988] has been concerned with the C/A (coarse/acquisition) ranging code on the L 1 frequency only. The known similarities between Navstar and Glonass are such that it should come as no surprise that the Glonass satellites also transmit a P (precision) ranging code. This paper describes a successful attempt to determine the P-code signal structure via digital receiver techniques. It culminates in a receiver design which is capable of operating on Navstar and Glonass L 1 C/A codes and Glonass L 1/L2 P-code.
