Abstract: | During the Production Phase, Global Positioning System (GPS) User Equipment CUE) will be integrated into a variety of military aircraft. A primary requirement is the use of GPS to satisfy the enroute navigation, non-precision approach and landing functions now fulfilled by T ACAN and VOR/DME in the National Airspace System (NAS). The procedures for verifying and validating concepts and instrument procedures for using GPS in the NAS are currently being formulated by a joint DoD & DoT team. Performance data that will assist in this process will be provided by a series of test flights using a modified T -39 aircraft. This paper addresses the design and development of a modular avionics suite that will be installed in the T -39 testbed aircraft. Specifically described is the architecture whereby a P-Ill production Receiver 3A, a SNU 84-l INS, a standard central air data computer, a data transfer system and a control/display unit (CDU) are integrated through a MIL-STD-l553B multiplex data bus. The design includes requirements for flight plan loading and management, area navigation, use of GPS or the INS as the primary navigator, automatic air alignment/updating of the INS using GPS fixes and control over component level built in test (BIT). In addition, the process of integration and testing prior to actual aircraft installation is described. Support efforts and equipment in the form of mission flight plan generation and test data recording and analysis are also discussed. |
