Altimeter Slant Range Analysis and Compensation

Abstract: In this paper, erroneous height information caused by slant range measurements is discussed. A simulation model for altimeters, considering geometric calculations and signal processing, is introduced. The simulation model is further used to isolate and analyze the different error sources discrete. Two example trajectories, a low dynamic general aviation approach and a high dynamic fighter aircraft low level flight are used to analyze the different error characteristic of a laser, a narrow beam cone and a wide beam cone radar altimeter. In the last section, three compensation methods to improve the altimeter measurement are introduced and applied to the trajectories. The advantages, disadvantages and fields of application are discussed for each compensation method.
