Abstract: | Signals of Opportunity (SoOps) signal processing, combined with low cost micro-electro-mechanical system (MEMS) inertial, electromagnetic, and barometric sensors, has the potential to deliver high-performance positioning and navigation capabilities in Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) challenged environments. SoOps signal processing acts on signals that are already available in a given radio frequency (RF) environment and provides both ranging and Doppler observables, which are exploited for continuous calibration of inertial sensors, even when in complex structures that introduce significant multipath interference. The paper discusses a hybrid SoOp navigation receiver that is capable of achieving better than 10-meter three-dimensional (3D) accuracy for unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) and meter-level accuracy for the dismounted warrior. The receiver technology consists of software defined radio (SDR) waveforms executing in low size, weight, and power (SWaP) hardware. Once completed, the hybrid receiver will be readily adaptable for a variety of navigation applications. Currently under development (TRL-4/5), the hybrid receiver leverages Loctronix Spectral Compression PositioningTM (SCP) technology, which enables processing of virtually any SoOp, and Doppler Aided Inertial NavigationTM (DAIN) to provide meter-level accuracy without a priori knowledge of RF infrastructure. |
