Abstract: | Both civilian and military precision navigation systems have been based on differential GPS. However, the susceptibility of the GPS signal to interference, both belligerent and spurious, has brought into question the use of GPS as a sole means navigation system. Also, GPS has proved to be difficult with respect to integrity design and its ability in obtaining any sort of acceptance or accreditation. The notion of using a relative inertial solution with calibrators is gaining popularity. This system determines a relative inertial solution between two platforms and incorporates sensors of opportunity to calibrate the errors in the relative inertial solution; if these sensors have independent error modes, they can be used for additional integrity monitoring. An obvious candidate is differential GPS. A promising alternate sensor is the General Electric Electro-Optical Grid Reference System (EOGRS). The EOGRS is a precision relative angular system capable of sub-milliradian accuracy. The system contains a laser transmitter on the reference platform and EO detectors on the user or tacked platform. The EOGRS transmitter is a low-power, Ultra Violet line-scanned laser system that provides a grid reference for angle determination relative to the transmitter. Other candidate sensors of opportunity include radar, barometric altimeter, and radar altimeter. This research has direct application to approach and landing systems as well as aerial refueling systems for piloted air vehicles and UAVs. |
