Networked Collaborative Navigation in an Urban Canyon

L. Grymek, O. Osechas, U. Khan

Abstract: The performance of satellite navigation systems degrades significantly in urban environments. The occlusion of satellites, typical of urban canyons, may lead to situations in which no position solution can be computed at all. In this paper, we propose a novel networked estimation approach to resolve such position uncertainties when conventional satellite navigation methods are not applicable due to the signal occlusion. Based on satellite visibility footprints, we introduce an algorithm for collaborative footprint-based navigation and show that the proposed approach enables satellite navigation in urban canyons.
