At the Centerline - GPS Usage in the Arizona DOT

Beggs Y. Nelson

Abstract: This paper will discuss the use of differential GPS to develop a center line file of the roadway for the transportation system in Arizona. The file will be used in ADOT's GIS system. The paper will also present GPS usage that crosses the boundaries of many jurisdictions within Arizona. ADOT is finding that ouor utilization of GPS is not limited to the ADOT transportation corridor but is affected and effected by issues across the state, and in some cases international boundaries. In addition, we will discuss the method that ADOT is employing in the specifications for new equipment using GPS. We plan to build in the ability to upgrade equipment as new technology becomes available.
