Abstract: | For air traffic controllers, weather information is important to navigate aircrafts. The radar of Civil Aeronautics Administration (CAA) in Taiwan not only provides track information of aircrafts but also output weather data that is especially crucial for aviation safety during dangerous meteorological phenomena. For the past fifteen years, the TRAC2100/MSSR radar in Magong airport and the ASR-9/MSSR radar in Kaohsiung national airport played a significant role in supporting the terminal air traffic management for air space over west Taiwan. But the occurrence of instability and performance degradation have lead Taiwan CAA to the decision to update the current radar equipment. In order to fully exploit the updated radar equipment and maintain aviation safety, commensurate revision on the corresponding software is required. This work therefore aims such software revision to handle the weather data output from the new radar equipment. The data from multiple radars is integrated by a family of WAN/LAN data communication server. A single communications server can support a number of WAN protocols, each capable of simultaneous access by multiple clients. A Graphic User Interface (GUI) is designed as an access for controllers to retrieve cloud information from the radars. The GUI provides a map on which clouds are represented by rectangles of different sizes. The map, made by the shape files, is helpful for the air traffic controller to recognize the geometry between clouds and airport. Besides locating the position of cloud, the GUI also colors the clouds to indicate the thickness of the clouds. As thick clouds usually suggest heavy rain or bad weather, air traffic controllers can thus inform the pilot to take proper action in advance and avoid the potential hazard. Since the air traffic service park in Taiwan can receive the data of all radars, this work supports simultaneous linkages with different radars. |
