Training During a Paradigm Shift

Samuel Shaw

Abstract: In the world of commercial marine navigation, the introduction of the Global Positioning System (GPS) has created the m&ings of a paradigm shift. For the first time in history ships can find their position with the push of a button (or less). For those involved in the training of the future merchant marine navigators this situation calls for some reevaluation. What will the navigator of the future need to know? What will that person’s educational background need to be? In this paper the efforts of the California Maritime Academy to grapple with these questions will be described.
