Abstract: | In this paper a GPS local area remote sensing system is proposed to measure ocean wave characteristics, such as wavelength and wave period which can be utilized to improve security of mooring and navigation in harbor. The remote sensing system receives GPS signals from line-of-sight channel and fading multipath channel reflected from specified sea-surface with two sub-systems respectively and then identify their arrival times and convert them to wave information according to status of GPS satellite and remote sensing system. One sub-system has a conventional antenna and front-end to receive line-of-sight signal in which real-time azimuth and elevation of visible satellite are obtained. The other sub-system includes left hand circular polarization arrayed antenna and wide bandwidth front-end to receive reflected signals from sea-surface. Especially the directional pattern of the arrayed antenna is shaped into a very narrow fan beam to receive reflected signals from narrow span, and the following front-end has enough bandwidth to identify each reflected signal. Software GPS receiver has also been developed to monitor signal variation, process mass available signals acquired from two sub-systems simultaneously. Teager-Kaiser Energy Operator is also applied on the correlator output in software GPS receiver to identify arrival time of each reflected signal. In order to verify that the remote sensing system can measure ocean wave characteristics, a numerical simulation test and an experimental test were carried out. In the numerical simulation, sea swell which is considered as one of major destructive factors near a harbor area is targeted and wavelength and wave period of sea swell can be definitely measured with different intensities and arrival times of reflected signals. In experimental test, the constructed remote sensing system was able to receive and identify reflected signals. Arrival times of line-of-sight signal and some reflected signals were also obtained. |
