Abstract: In this paper, we will present experimental data and processing results for mobile positioning with ATSC digital television (DTV) signals. DTV signals have been considered as a viable source of signals of opportunity (SOOP) for positioning when GPS becomes unavailable. However, the DTV signals used in the United States today, namely, ATSC-8VSB, are not designed for mobile but for fixed reception. More critically, the severe Rayleigh fading is omni-present in urban environments, which prevents continuous reception of ATSC-8VSB signals (pictures) by mobile users. Tracking of the pseudorandom (PN) code, which is the basis for DTV-based ranging, is less devastating when special acquisition and reacquisition schemes are implemented. Pilot broadcasting of the recently introduced ATSC mobile and handheld standard (ATSC-M/H) is now available in several metropolitan areas in the United States. In addition to strong coding schemes, ATSC-M/H incorporates longer and more frequent training sequences for effective channel equalization against severe multipath. In this paper, we will present a hardware prototype with seven radio channels tuned to different DTV stations, describe the baseband signal processing, pseudorange formation, and positioning algorithms together with clock calibration, and present the mobile test platform and scenarios. We will also show the ATSC-M/H signals captured in the San Francisco Bay area and compare it with ATSC-8VSB signals under various reception conditions. Finally, we will present field test results of mobile positioning with DTV signals and analyze the effects of such factors as calibration, multipath, and transmitter-receiver geometry on positioning performance.
