Integrated GNSS/INS Positioning Combined with SRTM Digital Elevation Model for Safe Approach, Landing and Takeoff Phase of a Flight

A. Ciecko and W. Jarmolowski

Abstract: The paper presents concept and preliminary results of the project concerning integration of GNSS/INS (Global Navigation Satellite System/Inertial Navigation System) positioning solution with combined SRTM (Shuttle Radar Topography Mission)/precise DEM (Digital Elevation Model) for air navigation. The project has been financed by National Science Centre of Republic of Poland. The project assumes creation of a mathematical model of air navigation based on GNSS and INS solution as well as integration of the result with digital elevation model (DEM) of the airfield and surroundings. This solution will allow for the future implementation of a fully functional navigation system in any type of the aircraft. Thanks to the system, the pilot will have a permanent access to an accurate and reliable information on the actual elevation and possible obstacles in the vicinity of the plane in each phase of flight, regardless of weather conditions. The study provides information on the practical, precise measurement of the airfield in Olsztyn with the use of All-Terrain-Vehicle (ATV), as well as development and integration of the highly accurate local digital elevation model with SRTM elevation model. Together with a sample flight a prototype software is presented combining the position of the aircraft with the model of the terrain and air navigation obstacles. The software informs a user about the current relevant flight parameters such as current altitude above the terrain, distance to air obstacles and the aircraft position relative to the glide path.
