COMMENTS ON "THE METHOD OF COPLANAR VERTICES FOR ASTRONOMICAL POSITIONING: PRESENT APPLICATIONS AND FUTURE EXTENSIONS"

Abstract: The subject paper [1] is engagingly written and well illustrated, and no doubt serves a useful pedagogical function. Yet the paper is seriously flawed in failing to acknowledge previously published developments with identical results. In fact, the algorithm presented in the paper first appeared in NAVIGATION over 20 years ago. The paper’s basic algorithm, given in the equations on page 238, is the same as that presented in [2]. The only difference in the expressions as printed is that the sin hk factors appear on different sides of the equals sign. The algorithm in [2] was commented upon in a subsequent issue [3], with some of the geometric implications being explained. Ten years later, the algorithm was refined [4].
