REPORT ON NAVIGATION OF PACUSAN DREAMBOAT FLIGHT

Major Norman P. Hays

Peer Reviewed

Abstract: The initial preparation for navigation of the PACUSAN Dreamboat from Oahu to Cairo, consisted of a review of polar navigation studies with Wing Commander Maclure of the Royal Canadian Air Force, Mr. Gatty for the United States Navy, and others, to devise methods for use of the Army Air Forces. Study and preparation were made on a basis of two routes: (1) via the magnetic North Pole and (2) via the geographic North Pole. Comparison of the navigation problems of the two routes indicated that the problems would be basically the same for either route, but it was apparent that the alternate route via the geographic pole would require somewhat different preparation and pre-flight computation.
