GRID NAVIGATION - GLOBAL REQUIREMENTS

Flight Lieutenant L. F. Banks, RAF

Peer Reviewed

Abstract: This condensation of a paper by Flt/Lt L.F. Banks, RAF,entitled "Grid Navigation in All Latitudes," was prepared by Flt/Lt J. Langston, RAF, his successor as RAF Exchange Officer at the U.S. Air Force Bombardment School. A large part of the introductory section of the original paper was deleted, in order that the most important sections could be printed in their entirety. In this section, Flt/Lt Banks discussc,s the need for a means of direction determination that is divorced from the conventional latitude-longitude lattice. He reaches the conclusion that a global grid is a necessity, particularly in view of the extended ranges of present-day aircraft.
