WEATHER BUREAU SERVICES ON THE SEA

Abstract: Eighty years ago yesterday Congress passed a Joint Resolution setting up a weather service in the United States for the purpose of giving notice on the Great Lakes and the seacoasts of the approach and force of storms. Later the duties were expanded to include forecasting of the weather, reporting of temperature and rainfall conditions, distribution of meteorological information in the interests of agriculture and commerce, and establishing the climate of the United States.
