Abstract: | The gnomonic map is plotted by projecting the latitudes and longitudes of the earth’s surface from the center of the globe onto a tangent plane. If we assume a spherical earth, this azimuthal projection will show all great-circle paths as straight lines, but less than one hemisphere can be shown on a single map, and the distortion in shape and area is considerable over much of the map. |
