Abstract: | In a paper, "The Selection of Stars for Navigation"(l), D.H. Sadler has presented a list of 57 selected stars, chosen by the Superintendent of H.M. Nautical Almanac Office and the Director of the U.S. Nautical Almanac Office to be used in the British and American Nautical Almanacs. No reasons are given for the choices made, but it is suggested that "it would be surprising if there is a navigator who has no improvement to suggest." This note will point out two weaknesses of the list and indicate how these deficiencies can be eliminated. It will also provide a method of estimating the effectiveness of a given list of navigation stars. |
