VECTOR DIAGRAMS FOR SAILBOAT DEAD RECKONING

Leonard E. Gray

Peer Reviewed

Abstract: Navigators of slow power boats and sailboats occasionally use vector diagrams for negotiating a strong current which is regular and well-known. But a complete diagram, which includes the effects of both current and leeway, has never been popular for sailboat use. A simple dead-reckoning plot, with experienced guessing, takes the sailor where he wants to g-more or less.
