Abstract: THE NOTION of a dry-land gyrocompass may startle the Ancient Mariner, who would ask whether there is not some easier way available to the landlubber for finding north. The question is a fair one. The answer is that under some circumstances there is no other practical way. The recent development in this country of a precision gyrocompass for fixed-base use has, in fact, met a need which has existed for a very long time, and which in recent years has become urgent.
