Abstract: | THE NEW BOWDITCH is a magnificent book. As a reference volume it is unsurpassed, covering as it does the entire field of navigation. It has been more than revised: it has been rewritten, enlarged, and revitalized. Preparation of this new edition was begun in April 1946. In the course of the work unavoidable delays were encountered-the urgency of other work, a shortage of qualified personnel, the necessity for making many changes to keep the material up-to-date and to have certain sections conform to the new Nautical Almanac. Complete accuracy was stressed; every item, every table entry, was checked and rechecked to obviate as far as humanly possible any error anywhere. The book was printed at the Government Printing Office, and this department did a job of which it can indeed be proud. The new Bowditch was released on December 6, 1958, the one hundred and twenty-eighth birthday of the Hydrographic Office. |
