CELESTIAL NAVIGATION WITHOUT A VERTICAL REFERENCE

Phillip R. Burton

Peer Reviewed

Abstract: IN OCTOBER '58, a new type of sextant was tested on H.M.A.S. Melbourne, flagship, R.A.N., with the express purpose of navigating by celestial bodies without the use of the observer’s sensible horizon or vertical reference. These tests, together with the approved theory, form the basis of this report.
