Abstract:	THIS PAPER discusses the uses and operating principles of sonar, and describes several types of fleet sonar equipment in current use. Fundamentals of transducer design are outlined, including a discussion of the three types of active elements, Directional and range characteristics of underwater sound propagation are analyzed, and an illustrative problem presents actual calculations of sonar characteristics for a typical system.
