Abstract: Harold Gatty was born at Campbelltown, Tasmania, 5 January 1903. His father, James Gatty, was a merchant who had come to Tasmania from Australia with his mother, nee Lucy Hall. He spent one year (1915) at St. Virgil’s College at Hobart, one of the southernmost ports of the world. In 1916 he entered the Royal Australian Naval College, where he spent three years and four months. There he experienced some trouble in mathematics, a subject in which he later excelled.
