AN ASSESSMENT OF THE PRESENT ACCURACY OF THE VALUE OF THE ASTRONOMICAL UNIT

Dirk Brouwer

Peer Reviewed

Abstract: The quality of the ephemerides contained in the current volumes of the American Ephemeris and similar volumes issued in other countries is to large extent due to the work of Simon Newcomb, who was in charge of the United States Nautical Almanac Office during the last quarter of the 19th century. Newcomb was the author of the theories of the motions of the four inner plannets that are still used for the construction of the ephemerides of the sun and the inner planets, but the area in which his accomplishments were especially notable was the evaluation of the constants of the solar system by a systtmatic comparison of the theories with observations.
