Abstract: THE NAVIGATOR WAS an important member of Polynesian society. His role was so crucial to the survivalof his group that he may also have been the chief, or high priest, during the period of the great migrations. A quantitative estimate of the state of his technology, therefore, is an appropriate subject for detailed study.
