Abstract: THIS PAPER REVIEWS the principles of operation of the major types of ship’s water speed sensors in use in underwater log systems since 1950 and discusses in more detail the operation of the electromagnetic underwater log widely used by western navies. The capabilities and limitations of ship’s water speed measurement are discussed briefly in order to provide proper perspective to the review of sensor characteristics.
