ABC'S OF RENDEZVOUS

Abstract: Several rendezvous flight plans are examined; they are grouped into three basic mehtods: direct ascent, in-plane launch and out-of-plane launch. The principal problems of rendezvous, out-of-plane launch and launch phasing, are discussed, and solutions are suggested. Final design of the rendezvous guidance scheme depends on the launch vehicle's mission objectives and on its position relative to that of the target and target orbit. The most flexible rendezvous guidance scheme will provide options for using either the direct ascent or the out-of-plane method, which encompasses the in-plane method as a special case.
