Abstract: SPERRY MARINE SYSTEMS Division has carried out extensive studies of conning function for the U.S. Maritime Administration (MAR-4D). Smong other things, these studies included an analysis of the lookout’s function in the conning of a vessel and a study of the feasibility of improving lookout efficiency with electromechanical aids. A hardware device, Lookout Assist Device (LAD), was developed to demonstrate practical feasibility. The LAD device uses radar and passive foghorn acoustic reception to automatically detect and call out the bearings of other vessels. Experiments with L,4D at sea have been very encouraging. Additional devices for assisting the conning officer in other aspects of his job are either under development or in the planning stage.
