Abstract: A NAVIGATION EXPERIMENT on the 1969 Mariner mission to Mars used television (TV) pictures of Mars in estimating the spacecraft trajectory. The lit limb of Mars was measured to determine the direction to the center of Mars in TV coordinates. The location of the centre of Mars was determined to ˜50 km (1s) from the TV data. Additional processing of the TV data is expected to yield the center location to ˜30 km (1s).
