Abstract: The use of automated merchant ship navigation systems is presently under evaluatlion by several ship operators. Evaluation includes definition of practical shipboard requirements and appraisal of economic benefits projected for positioning, collision avoidance, and complete conning systems. This paper review the systems the systems under evaluation, rationale that stimulated teh present evaluation, and projected trends in shipboard automation.
