Abstract: | Twenty-six years agon, Dr. Samuel Herrick, Astronomer at the University of California, Los Angeles, conceived the idea of a learned society concentrating on navigation. Largely as a result of his inspiration, the Institute was founded at the end of 1945. The pages of its Journal tell a fascinating story of the ways in which the philosophy and hardware of air navigation have since developed. Many of the ideas were originated and, alas, distorted by the pressures of war. Therefore, to understand what has happened during the life of the Institute, it is necessary first to go back to the early days of flight. |
