Abstract: This book deals with the history of the experiment by A.A. Michelson (1852-1931) to measure with an interferometer the difference in the speeds of two beams of light and his encounter with the ether theory on which nineteenth century physics was built. It also gives an historical account of the improvements in the interferometer made by E.W. Morely (1838-1923) and D.C. Miller (1866-1941)
