A DEVICE FOR DEMONSTRATING THE "DIP ERROR" OF A MAGNETIC COMPASS

R. A. McKnight

Peer Reviewed

Abstract: A training aid developed by the author for demonstrating some of the principles of the magnetic compass that are of interest to the aircraft pilot is described. The device provides a means for illustrating the systematic errors due to magnetic dip. “Northerly turning error” and “acceleration error” are demonstrable. The device also shows the interaction of bank angle, heading angle and magnetic dip angle.
