Towards Full GAST-D Capability - Flight testing DLR's Experimental GBAS Station

M. Felux, T. Dautermann, B. Belabbas

Abstract: In this paper we describe the results of real-time GAST-D GBAS flight trials which we carried out at DLR’s research airport in Braunschweig in 2011. In order to assess total system performance the GBAS navigation data was used to develop guidance on the approach. We review the background of the requirements, show the current status of the test bed, and then present the results of the most significant GAST-D specific monitors. These include mainly the detection algorithms for ionospheric disturbances and the application of geometry screening limits based on aircraft characteristics. During all flights we observed nominal behavior of all systems and no GAST-D availability interruptions.
