Safety and Innovation
Navigation has seen a series of cataclysmic changes starting with the commercialization of GPS processing. The field may be on the cusp of another, with increasing prevalence of disruptions to satellite navigation and the potential for machine learning to reduce the barriers for alternate sensing technologies. What is the prognosis for navigation in aviation, and what lessons can be applied from how we got to today’s systems and operations?

Bruce DeCleene is the Director of the office of Senior Technical Experts in the FAA’s office of Aviation Safety. He leads Chief Scientific and Technical Advisors in a range of disciplines to safely advance technologies through policy, standards and research. He has spent his career at the intersection of safety and innovation and is passionate about meeting public expectations for safety while harnessing new technologies to improve safety and efficiency.
