Effect of Coherent Integration Options on Target Detectability with Bistatic GNSS-based Airborne Receiver

This paper analyses a strong land target reflection using airborne GNSS reflectometry (GNSS-R) and assesses the effect of different coherent integration strategies on detecting the target. Bistatic radar models estimate the signal power reflected from a given target based on its radar cross-section (RCS). This paper delves into the effect of coherent integration time on RCS and evaluates the model using experimental data from an airborne receiver. The paper presents 1) a bistatic radar link budget focused on the impact of coherent integration time; 2) experimental results of a target reflection; and 3) assessment of bistatic radar models which predict target detectability depending on its RCS. The results provide the first evidence of a distinct target reflection in a conventional bistatic GNSS-R signal using an airborne receiver. The outcome from this paper gives strong support to taking advantage of GNSS-R technology’s small size and power requirements for target detection.
