The Institute of Navigation reflects on the impact and future of GNSS as it celebrates the second annual “International GNSS Day.”
Manassas Virginia, October 23, 2024 - Today, the Institute of Navigation (ION) proudly celebrates the second annual International GNSS Day, inviting its members and the global positioning, navigation, and timing (PNT) community to reflect on the profound impact that global navigation satellite systems (GNSSs) have had on the modern world. Instituted last year on this date, symbolizing the foundational GPS frequency of 10.23 MHz, International GNSS Day commemorates our technological heritage and recognizes the extraordinary contributions of GNSS technologies that continue to transform diverse sectors, such as agriculture, aviation, transportation, and surveying.
Marking 51 years since the inception of GPS, International GNSS Day not only honors the past, but also drives momentum for future advancements in GNSS. It is a day for professionals, students, educators, and enthusiasts to engage deeply with the technology and history of GNSS, sharing the passion that drives our field.
As part of our lead-up to today’s celebrations, ION GNSS+ 2024, held this past September, offered attendees a unique opportunity to engage directly with the broader PNT community. Attendees were invited to share their insights through mini-video interviews, discussing how they planned to celebrate International GNSS Day, their favorite memories related to GNSS, the advice they wished to give future PNT professionals, and their predictions for innovative GNSS applications or innovations in the future. These shared experiences have contributed to a richer narrative about the significance of GNSS in shaping our world, and we are thrilled to showcase the diverse voices and perspectives within our community. These interviews can be viewed on and shared from our website at https://info.ion.org/intlgnssday.
ION invites everyone to continue the celebration by exploring our educational modules designed to inspire and inform the next generation of GNSS experts. These resources are available on our website at https://info.ion.org/intlgnssday.
