Description: Portable navigation instrument for locating magnetic north; for use on a lifeboat


Item History: Lifeboat compass savaged from SS Congress after the fire which gutted her off the coast of Oregon in 1916. The fire occurred three miles from shore and the compass was used in the lifeboat getting passengers ashore.
