Description:
The GPS-0012 satellite was the Qualification Test Vehicle (QTV) for GPS Block II production program and never was intended to fly in space.
Item History:
Originally planned as a Block I Replenishment Satellite. Converted to a Block II Qualification Test Vehicle. Underwent testing at Rockwell and Arnold Engineering Development Center. Designed for Space Shuttle launch, but never flew due to Challenger disaster. Transferred to San Diego Air & Space Museum in pieces. This display of GPS-0012 at the San Diego Air & Space Museum is the only publicly displayed GPS SV.
