The Integrity and Assurance of the Positioning, Navigation and Timing (PNT) solutions under Military GPS User Equipment (MGUE) threats play a critical role in our military systems. MGUE threats are classified as “repeater jamming” or “meaconing” and “spoofing”. If undetected the MGUE measurements will affect the position, velocity and timing solution generated by the inertial navigation system (INS) that uses MGUE measurements, particularly the GPS Line-Of-Sight information and time. Honeywell has developed an innovative GPS Threat Monitoring (GTM) System on their Embedded GPS/INS (EGI) platform that mitigates the risks associated with MGUE threats, retains INS system resilience, and will aid our warfighters during their mission.
To guarantee the integrity of the PNT solution the GTM System integrates an atomic clock, an M-code receiver, and the EGI high-accuracy inertial navigation system with a novel threat response model. The threat response model addresses Threat Detection, Threat Mitigation and Threat Reporting.
To address Threat Detection in the position, velocity and time domain the GTM system utilizes a novel Short Term Inertial Coasting Solution Separation, Inertial Statistics Monitors and Alternate Time Source (ATS) Monitors. GTM benefits from Honeywell’s EGI high accuracy inertial sensors and a local low-noise, low-drift Chip-Scale Atomic Clock (CSAC) to determine the presence of inauthentic GPS signals.
During Threat Mitigation, once a threat has been detected, the GTM System assures a non-spoofed PNT solution by providing an inertially coasted navigation solution that relies primarily on inertial sensors. The time solution will switch to the low drift CSAC time and will be made available to the user.
The GTM system also offers a Recovery option. At the time of threat detection, GTM activates a recovery algorithm that detects the absence of the GPS threat. Once recovery is allowed GTM will provide a healthy GPS aided blended solution.
During Threat Reporting the GTM system informs the pilot/user about the GPS threat situation and whether an inauthentic GPS signal has been detected, mitigated and if a recovered solution is available. The GTM system also provides status information regarding the operating state of the monitors and the integrity of the blended solution.
The coordination of Threat Detection, Threat Mitigation and Threat Reporting are all managed via a central state engine.
The GTM system integrated flight code has been tested in simulation environments and has been shown to comply with the proposed protection limits and probability of false alarms requirements. The pre-detection navigation performance meets the blended requirements of a high performing EGI system, and the post-detection/pre-recovery navigation performance meets the full free inertial performance requirements.
The GTM function encompasses a novel threat response system that addresses the integrity of a GPS aided INS under a coordinated attack of the MGUE generated measurement data, particularly the GPS Line-Of-Sight position information and the time solution provided by the MGUE.
The GTM system can be applied in various GPS threat environments and will provide a reliable PNT solution under challenging or denied GPS environments.
