Development of a Modular Architecture for Low-SWAP Navigation Systems

Developing systems using a modular open systems approach (MOSA) is a key method for enabling faster tech refresh and reducing lifecycle costs. Several open architectures have been developed in recent years that support PNT systems including the Air Force led Sensor Open Systems Architecture (SOSA) and the Army’s C5ISR Modular Open Suite of Standards (CMOSS). Several aspects of these architectures, however, are not suitable for use on low size, weight, and power (SWAP) systems such as those used by dismounts .
The US Army DEVCOM C5ISR Center, IS4S, Inc., and Auburn University are currently developing a modular architecture for low-SWAP navigation systems as a reference implementation. It is primarily designed to support dismounted navigation use cases but is also applicable to other system types including mounted systems. The architecture covers both hardware and software components and is applicable to a wide range of sensor modalities and client system types. The navigation software is based on the pntOS applications programming interface (API), an software plugin architecture that allows third parties to easily integrate new or modified navigation components into the system while maintaining any proprietary Intellectual Property. Sensors use the recently released ASPN 2023 data model. Finally, specifications for internal card slots and external interface connectors allow system expansion and upgrades in the future.
An overview of the developed hardware and software architectures will be presented. Examples of current and planned 3rd party sensor and components integrations will be discussed. An initial demonstration of the Modular Architecture was performed where multiple configurations (including a mounted configuration) show the ability to tailor the system based on requirements. Integration with 3rd party components was also demonstrated which results of these tests and lessons learned will also be presented.
