Miniature, Precision Inertial Navigator

Collins Aerospace has determined that there is a significant need for a high precision inertial navigator with exceptionally small SWaP in order to satisfy near term mission requirements in the absence of or with degraded GPS. The key requirement is to achieve near aircraft navigation grade INS performance of 1nm/hr in a volume approaching 10 cu in. This paper presents an evaluation of currently available technologies and determines that the most likely to satisfy this requirement is an IMU design based FOG and MEMS accelerometer technologies. A brief description of the resulting SFOG-IMU being developed under IRAD will also be presented. In addition this paper offers a review and comparison of both practical and theoretical physical principles as well as the latest developments in component integration, electronics minimization, and algorithm enhancements that will enable inertial navigation accuracy improvements.
