Current Status of the Optical Rubidium Atomic Frequency Standard

The Air Force Research Laboratory is developing a compact, low-power, space-qualifiable atomic frequency standard based on a two-photon optical transition in rubidium vapor. Such a frequency standard will be valuable for both space and terrestrial applications, including satellite navigation, precision synchronization, and improved GPS-independence in critical systems. We present the current status of the Optical Rubidium Atomic Frequency Standard (ORAFS), including both performance improvements and reductions in size and power consumption compared to previous iterations.
