Precision Timing at the University of Alabama - Progress and Future Center Plans

The University of Alabama has launched a new interdisciplinary graduate education program in precision timing. This program will address a major hole in the current STEM pipeline, in a field that silently powers one-third of our nation’s economy. Currently, academic presence in precision timekeeping is small and strongly focused on new technologies many decades from implementation. This has created a roughly 30-year gap in training to maintain and innovate the nation’s current timekeeping infrastructure. The “greying” of the field has not gone unnoticed by government, defense and industrial entities, who have made the need clear for an interdisciplinary program to create a talent pipeline in current timekeeping technologies and methods. In response, our team has created MS and PhD degree specializations in precision timing, assembled research faculty to study, improve, and train students in current timekeeping systems and components, collaborating with industry and government partners. In this talk, we will outline our efforts and plans to build a training center for the time & frequency community, and how government and industrial entities can get involved.
