In modern military operations, reliable Positioning, Navigation, and Timing (PNT) is crucial for the successful execution of missions. Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) have become the backbone of PNT for both civilian and military applications. However, the increasing prevalence of GNSS jamming and spoofing, particularly in contested environments, has highlighted the vulnerabilities inherent in relying solely on satellite-based systems. To address these vulnerabilities, alternative navigation systems, such as Enhanced Long-Range Navigation (eLoran), have gained significant attention.
eLoran offers a resilient, low-frequency terrestrial navigation solution capable of providing PNT independently of GNSS. Its robustness against jamming and spoofing makes it a viable candidate for ensuring continuous, reliable PNT in GNSS-denied environments. A German initiative successfully verified the concept of a mobile eLoran system specifically designed for military operations, focusing on its suitability for tactical applications.
